(US-12) is known as Rand Road
through much of the northwest
suburbs. It runs mostly from
southeast to northwest entering
Illinois near The Skyway at the
Indiana border and leaving
Illinois near Richmond and Genoa
City, WI. Route 12 runs from near
Detroit, Michigan, through
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin,
Minnesota, South Dakota, North
Dakota, Montana, Idaho, and ends
in Aberdeen, Washington.
Interestingly US Route 12 also
passes through an Aberdeen, South
Dakota.
14 (US-14) Also known as
Northwest Highway and Ronald
Reagan Highway, runs mostly
southeast to northwest. It starts
on the northwest side of Chicago
(at Ridge and Peterson) and
leaves Illinois at Bigfoot, WI.
Stay on US-14 and you'll travel
through Wisconsin, Minnesota,
South Dakota, and onward to the
entrance to Yellowstone National
Park west of Cody, Wyoming.
19 (IL-19) Also known as
Irving Park Road, Irving Park
Boulevard, and Chicago-Elgin
Road. Starts at the lake shore
just north of Wrigley Field and
heads west just south of O'Hare
and onward to Elgin.
20 (US-20) Also known as Lake
Street until it jumps South on
Mannheim, becomes LaGrange Road
South until 95th Street, where it
heads East until near the Skyway,
where it enters Hammond, Indiana.
Eastward US-20 passes through
Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and
all the way to Boston,
Massachussetts. Westward US-20
heads Northwest through DuPage
County to Elgin, Rockford,
Freeport, passes through Iowa,
Nebraska, Wyoming (passes through
Yellowstone), Idaho, and ends at
US-101 in Newport, Oregon.

41 (US 41) Traverses from the
Wisconsin border to the Indiana
border. South from Wisconsin
US-41 is I-94 until Russell Road,
where it turns off into Skokie
Highway. Heading south to Chicago
US-41 becomes several different
street names and then Lake Shore
Drive, where it heads
Indiana.
43 (IL-43) Runs north and
south -- north of Niles is called
Waukegan Avenue and south of
Niles is known as Harlem
Avenue.

53 (IL-53) is now part of the
freeway that runs from the 290
Extension to Dundee Road (IL-68).
IL-53 leaves the northbound
freeway at IL-68 (Dundee Rd.) and
follows IL-68 west and then US-12
northwest to the old Hicks Road
north of Rand Road (US-12) into
Long Grove. The freeway north of
Dundee Road is not numbered, but
signs display "To IL-53" which
you can access after you leave
the freeway at westbound
Lake-Cook Road to the Old Hicks
Road intersection and head north.
Southbound from the freeway at
Biesterfield Road in Elk Grove
Village, IL-53 leaves the freeway
to follow south on Rohlwing Road,
and changes to many different
road names south past Joliet and
Wilmington and stops at
Braidwood, Illinois.
55 (I-55, see also
Stevenson Expwy) runs from Lake
Shore Drive (US-41) to Joliet,
Bloomington-Normal, Springfield,
to St. Louis, to Memphis, and to
New Orleans. Marked Historic
US-66 where it replaced
US-66.
57 (I-57) Runs from the
Dan Ryan at 95th Street southwest
through Illinois cities Kankakee
and Champaign-Urbana onward
through southern Illinois and
onward to Memphis, TN.
58 (IL-58) runs from US-41
to the city of Elgin. Also known
as Evanston-Elgin Rd or Golf Rd.
Mainly known as Golf Rd. in
Arlington Heights where it runs
east-west through the south side
of Arlington Heights connecting
to Mount Prospect to the east and
Rolling Meadows to the west.
59 (IL-59)
60 (IL-60)
62 (IL-62) Also known as
Algonquin Road, runs northwest
from IL-83 in Des Plaines to the
city of Algonquin. On the south
side of Arlington Heights IL-62
connects Mount Prospect to the
east and Rolling Meadows to the
west. Continuing west, IL-62
remains Algonquin Road until the
route number ends at IL-31 just
after crossing the Fox River.
Algonquin Road continues west as
McHenry County Road Number V32. A
fork at Pyott Road takes V32
north with Pyott Road. Algonquin
Road continues as McHenry County
A48 until it ends in Huntley at
IL-47.
64 (IL-64) North Avenue
starts near the Lake Michigan
shoreline, takes you west to Iowa
and stretches to just west of
Omaha, Nebraska. Notice it is not
a US route.
68 (IL-68) Dundee Road
runs east and west through the
north side of Arlington Heights
and connects to Buffalo Grove and
Wheeling to the east and Palatine
to the west. Eastward, IL-68 ends
at I-94/US-41. Dundee Road
continues until it ends near
Milton and Glencoe Road in
Glencoe. Westward, IL-68 passes
through Palatine, Barrington,
joins with IL-59 along Crabtree
Nature Center in Barrington
Hills, joins IL-62 for a short
time, then heads West to enter
East Dundee, where it becomes
Barrington Avenue and then ends
as Penny Avenue at an
intersection with IL-72 (Higgins
Road) just East of the Fox
River.
72 (IL-72)
80 (I-80) connects
Teaneck, New Jersey to San
Francisco,California. It passes
through Illinois (south of
Chicago) from Lansing, Indiana to
Quad Cities in Iowa.
83 (IL-83)
88 (I-88) East-West
Tollway, York Road to Dixon,
where it merges with I-80..
90 (I-90) Part of Dan Ryan
(I-90/94), Kennedy Expressway and
Northwest Tollway. Connects
Skyway to Rockford to Beloit, WI
locally and Boston to Seattle,
nationwide.
190 (I-190) Expressway
runs a short length from the
Kennedy Expressway into O'Hare
International Airport.
290 (I-290, see Eisenhower
Expressway)

Arlington Heights Road,
formerly known as State Road, is
the main North-South road through
Arlington Heights. Arlington
Heights Road passes North through
Buffalo Grove and Long Grove,
where it ends as a dead end just
South of Long Grove - Aptakisic
Road. Southward, Arlington
Heights Road passes under the
I-90 overpass with a full
interchange and continues through
Elk Grove and Itasca, where it
ends just North of the Itasca
Country Club (a few blocks North
of Irving Park Road or
IL-19).
Barrel
Bishop Ford Expwy
(officially Bishop Louis Henry
Ford Freeway) Originally named
the Calumet Expressway and
renamed in 1996. Runs the I-94
from 95th Street (where the Dan
Ryan name ends and I-57 splits
southwest) until the Kingery
Expressway (I-80).
The Canyon is the
financial district where La Salle
Street runs into Jackson
Boulevard. The Chicago
Board of
Trade
faces visitors looking down La
Salle Street.
Cash Box is the facility
which includes toll lanes and
toll gates.
Chicago Skyway opened in
1961 and was considered part of
I-90 until 1999. The skyway joins
the gap of I-90 between the Dan
Ryan on one side and the Indiana
Tollway on the other
[MAP].
The Circle is the
intersection of I-90/94 and I-290
near the University of Illinois
at Chicago and near the medical
centers along I-290
[MAP].
Dan Ryan Expwy (I-90/94)
is one of the widest expressways
in the world. Opened in 1962 and
named after the late President of
the Cook County Board of
Commissioners. The Dan Ryan runs
from The Circle to 95th Street
(near Comiskey Park and where
I-94 and I-57 split).
Downtown

East-West
Tollway (I-88) Renamed The
Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway
(6/11/04) runs west from the
Hillside Strangler (junction with
Tri-State Tollway) through Oak
Brook, Naperville, DeKalb,
Rochelle, Dixon, near East Moline
and Rock Island where it merges
and becomes I-80 through the Iowa
state line. Near Streator it is
no longer a tollway and becomes
the Ronald Reagan Memorial
Highway.
Edens Expwy (I-94) runs
north from the Kennedy Expressway
up to Northbrook, where The Spur
connects to the Tri-State. I-94
diverges West and US-41 diverges
North as "The Edens" becomes
Skokie Highway at about Lake Cook
Road. US-41 becomes one in the
same with I-94, just north of
Lake Avenue, not Lake Street
(US-20). The Edens opened in
1951, becoming the first
expressway in the Chicago area
and named in honor of William G
Edens, a banker and financial
advocate of paved roads.
Eisenhower Expwy (I-290)
opened in 1954 and originally was
named the Congress Expressway
until renamed in 1969. Runs from
downtown coming out of Congress
Street going west and then north
near Elk Grove and Schaumburg
where it becomes the I-290
Extension and then Route 53.
Elgin-O'Hare Expwy (no
number) Opened in 1993 and runs
from Eisenhower Extension (I-290,
Rt 53) near Itasca and Elk Grove
Village west to Lake Street near
Hanover Park and Bartlett .
Doesn't really run to O'Hare or
Elgin, yet.
Euclid Avenue runs East
and West near the middle of
Arlington Heights. From the West
it begins at Roselle Road near
Harper College in
Palatine/Inverness and passes
East through Rolling Meadows,
Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect
and Prospect Heights. Euclid
Avenue becomes Lake Avenue
between Des Plaines River Road
(US-45) and Milwaukee Avenue
(IL-21) while passing through the
Lake Avenue Woods, a Cook County
Forest Preserve. Lake Avenue
heads East through Glenview and
Wilmette, where it ends at the
Lake Michigan shoreline just east
of Sheridan Road.
Gipper's Block a gaper's

Hillside Strangler is the
location where the East-West
Tollway and the Tri-State Tollway
converge with the Eisenhower
Expressway in western Cook County
[MAP].
Hubbard Cave is an area of
the Kennedy Expressway which runs
underneath Hubbard Street
[MAP].
Ike (I-290, see Eisenhower
Expressway)
I-PASS
is the Illinois Tollway's
electronic toll collection system
that allows toll payment
electronically, eliminating the
need to carry change and stop the
car for payment.
Jane Addams Tollway is the new name for the Northwest Tollway (see Northwest Tollway).

The Junction is where the
Edens and Kennedy merge
[MAP].
Kennedy Expwy (I-90/94)
Originally named the Northwest
Expressway upon completion in
1960. Renamed John F. Kennedy
Expressway in 1963. Runs as
I-90/94 from downtown Chicago (at
Eisenhower Expressway) until
Foster Avenue, where the Edens
(I-94) splits north and the
Kennedy Expressway becomes I-90
only continuing to O'Hare
International Airport, where the
Northwest Tollway begins and
continues west as I-90.
Kingery Expwy (I-80/94)
Runs east from the Bishop Ford to
the Indiana state line.
Lake-Cook Road (or County
Line Road because it also divides
McHenry and Kane County) is a
major highway that runs East-West
from Algonquin and Barrington
Hills eastward through Barrington
(where it is also known as Main
Street), Deer Park, Palatine,
Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove,
Wheeling, Riverwoods, Deerfield,
and Highland Park, where it ends
at Green Bay Road (just east of
US-41).
Lake Shore Drive (US 41
from Foster north) runs from
Hollywood south to 67th Street,
partly along the shore of Lake
Michigan and past Soldier
Field.
The Loop is the heart of
Chicago named after the
El
tracks
that form a ring (clockwise)
connecting Lake Street, Wabash,
Van Buren, and Wells Street.
LSD (see Lake Shore
Drive)
The Mile Long Bridge is a
bridge along I-294 stretching
from about Odgen Avenue to about
183rd Sreet. A very large UPS
distribution center is just south
of the Mile Long Bridge
[MAP].
North-South Tollway
(I-355) Runs from Eisenhower
Extension to I-55.
Northwest Tollway is now the Jane Adams Tollway (I-90)
runs from O'Hare International
Airport (where Kennedy Expressway
name ends) west throught
Arlington Heights, Schaumburg,
Elgin and northwest through
Rockford and up to the Wisconsin
state line.
Numbering System applies
to interstates, highways and
building addresses. East-West
interstates and highways have
even numbers. North-South
interstates and highways have odd
numbers. East-West Interstate
numbers increase as they are
placed South to North (e.g., I-10
through Texas, I-94 through North
Dakota). North-South Interstate
numbers increase as they are
placed West to East (e.g., I-5
through Oregon, I-95 through
Virginia). East-West US Route
numbers increase as they are
placed North to South (eg.,
Montana US-2, Alabama US-84). The
North-South US Route numbers
increase as they are placed East
to West (eg., Maine US-1,
California US-101). House numbers
or building addresses use even
numbers on the West side of a
North-South street and the North
side of an East-West street.
House and building numbers use
odd numbers on the East side of a
North-South street and the South
side of an East-West street.
Ohio Feeder is where you
get off at the Ohio exit and
drive the long Ohio exit ramp
straight down to Ohio Street
[MAP].
The Post Office is the
building over I-290, just east of
the Circle (checking, not sure if
it still a Post Office).
Ronald Reagan Highway (US
14 in Illinois) also known as
Northwest Highway.
Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway
and Tollway (I-88) Renamed
The Ronald Reagan Memorial
Tollway (6/11/04) runs west from
the Hillside Strangler (junction
with Tri-State Tollway) through

Spur is a strech of
superhighway that connects I-94
to the Tri-State where I-294
becomes I-94 and heads north to
Wisconsin [MAP].
State and Madison is the
center (0,0) location where all
street numbering for Chicago
starts.
Steel Bridge is a large
bridge on I-94 where it is known
as the Bishop Lewis Ford Freeway
betweeen Sibley Boulevard and
130th Street. The bridge crosses
the Calumet River and several
railroad tracks and is just south
of Calumet Harbor
[MAP].
Stevenson Expwy (I-55)
Originally opened as the
Southwest Expressway in 1964. In
1965 renamed the Adlai E.
Stevenson Expressway in honor of
the late United Nations
ambassador and former governor of
Illinois. Currently runs from
Lake Shore Drive to DuPage County
near Joliet and Bolingbrook. I-55
continues to Springfield, IL and
further (see I-55).
The Tri-State
Tollway (I-94, I-294,
I-80) starts heading south at the
I-94/US-41 junction near the
Illinois-Wisconsin border, runs
along I-294 from Deerfield to the
Bishop Ford Expressway, and ends
connecting with I-94 again at the
I-94/IL-394 junction 2 miles from
the Indiana line. Near Deerfield,
I-94 veers eastward via The Spur
and becomes the Edens running
parallel to the Tri-State
(I-294). From Hazelcrest to the
Bishop Ford, I-294, the Tri-State
and I-80 are the same stretch of
roadway. Connects the three
states: Indiana, Illinois and
Wisconsin.
