Autumnal
Equinox In the northern
hemisphere, the date (near
September 22) when night and day
are nearly the same length and
the Sun, moving southward,
crosses the celestial equator (0
declination, which is the angle
between -90, south pole and +90,
north pole).
Calcitrol is the active
form of vitamin D -- the
metabolite that is created in the
body after consumption of vitamin
D-containing food or exposure to
the sun.
Corona The sun's hot
atmosphere that is visible during
a total solar eclipse.
Cytokines are regulatory
proteins (intercellular
mediators), such as interleukins
and lymphokines released by cells
of the immune system in the
generation of an immune response.
Sometimes influenced by
ultraviolet exposure.
Day The time it takes for
complete rotation of the
earth.
Daylight Savings Time (DST) A
one hour shift which is in effect
from the first Sunday in April to
the last Sunday of October.
Daylight savings time begins when
clocks are set from 2:00 a.m. to
3:00 a.m. (Spring forward) on the
first Sunday in April and ends
when clocks are set from 3:00
a.m. to 2:00 a.m. on last Sunday
in October (Fall back).
Midnight The time of day
when, on average over the year,
the Sun is furthest away from its
highest point (zenith) in the
sky. Midnight is 0:00 in
universal time (UT, GMT).
Midnight itself is neither
a.m. nor p.m., but the minute
between 12:00 midnight and 12:01
is a.m., so midnight itself is
often denoted 12:00 a.m. on
digital clocks in the
U. S.
Noon The time of day when,
on average over the year, the Sun
reaches its highest elevation
(zenith) in the sky. Noon is
12:00 in universal time (UT,
GMT). Noon itself is
neither a.m. nor p.m., but
the minute between 12:00 and
12:01 is p.m., so 12:00 noon is
often denoted p.m. on digital
clocks in the U. S. Ante
meridiem (am) is before noon.
Post meridiem (pm) is after
noon.
Photobiology
Photoimmunology
Solar Day The time it
takes for the sun to reach its
highest point in the sky during a
single rotation of the earth.
Solar Eclipse An
occultation (blocking) of the Sun
by the Moon. 240 solar eclipses
occur every century. Solar
eclipses take place during
daylight hours during a new moon.
Solar eclipses are total or
annular (moon is farther out, so
it doesn't totally block the
sun). Total solar eclipses can
last up to 7.6 minutes, while
annular solar eclipses can last
up to 12.5 minutes.
Summer Solstice In the
northern hemisphere, the longest
day (maximum length of time
elapsed between sunrise and
sunset) of the year (near June
22, range 20th to 22nd, 21st
lately) The Sun is farthest
north, when the declination
(angle between -90, south pole
and +90, north pole) of the Sun
on the northern hemisphere summer
solstice is known as the tropic
of cancer (23° 27'). The
summer solstice marks the first
day of summer. In the southern
hemisphere, winter and summer
solstices are exchanged.

Sunrise
The time at which the leading
limb of the Sun first rises above
the horizon.
Sunset The time at which
the trailing limb of the Sun
first sets below the horizon.
Universal Time (UT) The
number of hours, minutes, and
seconds which have elapsed since
midnight (when the Sun is at a
longitude of 180°) in the
Greenwich time zone. Central
Standard Time in Chicago and
Arlington Heights is six hours
behind Universal Time, except
during Daylight Savings Time,
when Central Daylight Time (CDT)
is in effect and the time zone is
5 hours behind Universal
Time.
Vernal Equinox In the
northern hemisphere, the date
(near March 21) when night and
day are nearly the same length
and the Sun, moving northward,
crosses the celestial equator (0
declination, which is the angle
between -90, south pole and +90,
north pole).
Vitamin D
Winter Solstice In the
northern hemisphere, the shortest
day (minimum length of time
elapsed between sunrise and
sunset) of the year (near
December 22, range 20th to 22nd,
21st and 22nd lately) The Sun is
farthest south, when the
declination (angle between -90,
south pole and +90, north pole)
of the Sun on the northern
hemisphere winter solstice is
known as the tropic of capricorn
(-23° 27'). The winter
solstice marks the first day of
winter. In the southern
hemisphere, winter and summer
solstices are exchanged.
Year In the Gregorian
calendar there are 365 days in
non-leap years and 366 days in a
leap year. The average number of
days in a Gregorian year equals
365.2425 days. A leap year is a
year in which an extra day in
added to the calendar in order to
catch up with the approximate .25
day that is not counted in
non-leap years. In a leap year,
the extra day (known as a leap
day) is added at the end of
February, giving it 29 instead of
the usual 28 days.
