AHFD Sends Tower 1 with Four Firefighters to
Gulf Region
SEP 05 2005 -- Arlington Heights Fire
Department sent its front line Ladder Tower Truck
with a crew of four to an unknown staging area near
New Orleans or Baton Rouge early Monday. Tower One

Local Firefighters Are Likely to Help in Katrina
Disaster Area
SEP 01 2005 -- The Federal Emergency Management
Association (FEMA)
is calling on the nation's fire service to send
1,000 two-person firefighter teams to assist
citizens affected by Hurricane Katrina in
Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. the initial
teams dispatched to the Gulf Coast region are
limited to career fire fighters, and must be
selected and approved by the chief of the fire
department.
Teams must be physically fit, self sufficient and
capable of working in austere conditions for an
extended period of time while sleeping on the
ground and eating MREs. In addition fire fighters
are asked to bring carry-on baggage only &endash;
backpacks are recommended. Teams will be working
for at least a 30-day period. Efforts to
communicate these requests are coordinated through
the International
Association of Fire
Chiefs
and the International
Association of Fire
Fighters.
Portillo's on Dundee to Undergo New
Construction
SEP 01 2005 -- Portillo's
is going to reconstruct their facility at Dundee
Road and Kennicott to improve parking and
drive-thru capability. Much more of their business
is drive-thru related compared to the amount of
sit-down eating it experienced when it originally
opened.
Arlington Heights Road Construction Update
AUG 28 2005 -- Arlington Heights Road set up to
undergo resurfacing beginning August 29 and
finishing in December (IDOT
North Cook Construction Update

Underway
AUG 27 2005 -- New homes site is developing at the
corner of Northwest Highway and Illinois in
Arlington Heights.
Euclid Avenue Closed for Resurfacing
AUG 18 2005 -- Euclid Avenue is closed from
Arlington Heights Road to Northwest Highway. No
signs posted for completion date.
New Library Entrance, Cafe Open
AUG 12 2005 -- Cafe, vending machines, seating,
relocated periodicals, new ADA compliant elevator
and more are all part of new library entrance on
Dunton Avenue. Opened August 11.
Arlington Mane Event, Arlington Million Set to
Start
AUG 08 2005 -- On Friday, August 12 from
6-10:30 pm the first 'Million Dollar Block Party'
in the new Harmony Park at Campbell and Vail will
celebrate the upcoming Arlington
Million
on Saturday, August 13. The yearly 'end of summer'
party celebrates Arlington Park's Arlington Million
which made a miraculous comeback after a fire
destroyed the entire grandstand 20 years ago, July
31, 1985.
Arlington Heights Road Resurface Work from
August until December 2005
AUG 05 2005 -- Arlington Heights Rd from Palatine
Rd to Central Rd in Arlington Heights will undergo
resurfacing work and curb repair from August 5
until December 5 (IDOT
North Cook Construction Update

Arlington Heights Bicycle Race Saturday July 30
JUL 28 2005 -- Arlington Classic Criterium is
Saturday, July 30 from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m. Course
has changed to just south of downtown Arlington
Heights near South Middle School. The course is

Thunderstorm Rips Arlington Heights, Cuts
Power
JUL 26 2005 -- A severe storm cell popped up
quickly on radar and damaged trees and power lines
Monday night at about 8 p.m. Many residents and
businesses in west-central Arlington Heights were
without power throughout the night and early
morning.

A mature tree was snapped and twisted at the trunk
across from Wayne's Pizza (1618 W. Northwest
Highway) during Monday night's storm.
102 Degrees at O'Hare!
JUL 24 2005 -- The thermometer at O'Hare hit
102 degrees Farenheit at 2:52 p.m. Sunday.
Temperatures hovered over 100 most of the afternoon
Sunday. Thanks to drier air, the heat index did not
reach the expectation of 110 or higher.
Downtown Not Done? Planning Continues
JUL 23 2005 -- Evanston-based Calder
LaTour, Inc.
will lead focus groups in August to study possible
enhancements for downtown Arlington
Heights.
The study is forthcoming from the work of a
downtown task force created last year. The task
force is changing developmental focus from
residential to retail. The block bordered by
Campbell, Evergreen, Sigwalt and Dunton is under
review for possible development. At a recent
discussion, developers Chuck FioRito of
Joseph
Freed
& Associates
and Dick Spinell of Mid-America
Real Estate Group
(Deer Park Town Center deveoper) promoted more of a
'Lifestyle' shopping center environment for
downtown -- more like Deer
Park Town Center
or The
Glen Town Center
in Glenview.
Summer of 2005 Is Chicago's Driest On Record
JUL 19 2005 -- Only 0.2" of rain has fallen at
O'Hare in over seven weeks since June 10. The hot
and dry Chicago summer of 2005 has produced more
90-degree days than the last two summers combined.
According to Tom Skilling's WGN Weather
Blog,
this Chicago extreme summer ranked the fifth
warmest for the period June 10 through July 18.
Digital Civic Events Sign Approved
JUL 19 2005 -- A 3-by-10-foot electronic
display that will flash information for a civic
events sign (masonry built) at the northwest corner
of Northwest Highway and Arlington Heights Road was
approved Monday night at a cost of $196,550. The
contract was approved for QT Signs of Schaumburg to
deliver the display. Village Board voted 6-2
(Kucera and Breyer against).
Applebee's Coming to South Arlington
JUL 17 2005 -- Applebee's
restaurant has approval from the plan commission
for a request to rezone land just east of the
intersection of Arlington Heights and Algonquin
roads to allow Applebee's construction. The next
step for approval will be a vote by the village
board.
Pioneer Park Project Construction Plans Begin
JUL 09 2005 -- The Arlington
Heights Park
District
hired Williams Architects & Associates to
execute plans to nearly double the size of the
community center and remove the service facility to
replace it with green space. The service facility
will be moved near existing public works facilities
on east Davis. A Pioneer
Park Project
public meeting to seek input for facility needs and
neighborhood impact concerns is scheduled for
Tuesday, July 12 at 7:00 pm at Pioneer Park 500 S.
Fernandez Ave. Completion is targeted for April
2007.
