during a mortar attack when mortar rounds
hit his camp in Balad, Iraq. He was laid
to rest Tuesday (July 13) at Arlington

October 13 at the Randhurst Mall Shopping
Center.

Rand and Dundee in Palatine.

Village Board Tuesday for the northwest corner of
Algonquin and Golf roads near the Surrey Ridge
Shopping Center. State Rep. Carolyn Krause, R-66th
credited with helping communications to get
IDOT
to approve Algonquin Road entrance stoplight that
Lowe's officials required.

First Annual Walter Payton to be Hosted at South
Middle School
SEP 01 2004 -- A 16,726 yard distance of the race
commemorates Payton's rushing record, which

broke Oct. 27, 2002, with an 11-yard run. Connie
Payton, who founded the Walter
Payton Cancer Fund,
will be present at the start and finish. Other
events are also planned around the event, with more

Arlington Heights Selects New Police Chief
AUG 30 2004 -- Gerald S. Mourning, formerly
Police Chief of West Chicago, will take command
Sept. 27 as chief of the Arlington Heights Police
Department.
Kicken Kris Wins Arlington Million XXII
AUG 14 2004 -- Kicken Kris (4) with jockey Kent
Desormeaux placed first after a disqualifiation
ruled against Powerscourt (10) for interference in
the stretch. Attendance over 30,000. More at

Mane Event and Million Dollar Block Party Prep

AUG 11 2004 -- Friday, August 13 the stage will be
set on Vail Avenue near the municipal garage across
from Dunton Tower. Entertainment will include
performances by the Ides of March and New Colony
Six. The Metropolis Youth Symphony will also
entertain and will be directed by Suzanne
Gindin.
Regina's, Peggy Kinnane's, Riviera, California
Pizza Kitchen, Chin's, Harry's, Bangkok Cafe, Urban
Harvest, Tuscan Market and Cabernet are some of the
participating food vendors that will be set up at
the block party. Streets near the Campbell and Vail
intersection will be blocked starting at 4 am on

Million XXII
is Saturday, August 14, 2004. Gates Open: 10 AM CDT
with a Special First Post at 11:45 AM CDT. The
Arlington Million will be broadcast live on
ABC
(Channel 7) at 3 pm CDT as part of NTRA
Super Saturday, featuring four of the top
thoroughbred races this weekend. The other three
races are the Alfred Vanderbilt Handicap, the Sword
Dancer Handicap and the Beverly D. Stakes.

Fire Chief Rodewald Retires from Arlington
Heights Fire Department
AUG 07 2004 -- After 20 years as fire chief and 30
years on the department, Bruce Rodewald retires.
Glen Ericksen will be acting fire chief as the
village of Arlington Heights searches for a
permanent replacement.
New Metra Train Schedule for Northwest Line
August 15
AUG 06 2004 -- Metra
will adjust the Northwest
line
schedule on August 15. The most important feature
will be the addition of a train that departs
Saturday at 10:30 pm from Chicago and makes all 23
stops, including Arlington Heights, on the
Northwest
line.
Other adjustments have been made and some other
trains have been dropped, which will be published
on August 15.
Commission Approves Teardown Rules for Arlington
Heights
JUL 28 2004 -- Twenty-nine page document
establishes specific design guidelines for mass,
bulk and volume, height and roof forms, additions,
landscaping and tree preservation regarding single
family house construction in Arlington Heights.
Commissioners hope to present recommendations to
village board by the end of the year.
Arlington Chamber of Commerce Looking for New
Executive Director
JUL 25 2004 -- Leona Zanetti is no longer
executive director. Ron Crawford will again serve
as interim executive director, a position he held
after Arlington grad Sharon Romack resigned in
November 2002 to take a new position. Zanetti began
as executive director in May 2003.
Affordable Housing, Condo Project Approved for
North Arlington
JUL 22 2002 -- Arlington Heights Village Board gave
Tandem
Realty
permission to build three, five-story condominium
buildings on a site east of Arlington Heights Road.
Timber Court Condominiums will have 108 units and
will designate 21 units available for people who
earn less than the local median income. Twelve
one-bedroom units designated as affordable housing
will sell for $129,250. Nine two-bedroom units will
sell for $140,000. Other units in the development
will include a starting price of $240,000.
New TIF Considered Near Rand and Palatine
Road
JUL 19 2004 -- Village Board Monday (7/12/2004)
approved preparation of a redevelopment plan and
proposal to create a TIF district for the southeast
and southwest corners of Rand and Palatine roads
... and possibly the northeast corner of Arlington
Heights Road and Palatine Road. Southpoint

Associates
is asking for $6.3 million in TIF money to develop
a combined townhouse/condominium
and retail project. Town and Country owner
Visconsi
Companies Ltd.,
is asking for $4.2 million in redevelopment costs
and for the village to forgive a portion of its
sales taxes to help attract a major retailer to the
shopping center, which would result in an
additional $2 million.
Hersey Graduate Maj. Paul Syverson III Laid to Rest
at Arlington
Maj. Paul Syverson III grew up in
Arlington Heights, graduated from
Hersey
High
School
in 1989 and played on Hersey's 1987 state
championship football team (Class 6A,
defeating East St. Louis 26-6).
He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze
Star for helping put down a November 2001
prison revolt in Afghanistan.
Paul was just two weeks from returning
home when he was killed.
