Fourth of July Arlington Heights, Frontier Days

- A Tribute to the

(Mon night). Arlington Heights Fireworks at
Arlington
Park Racecourse
and Trackside OTB, 2200 W. Euclid Ave. A 30-minute
fireworks display set to a patriotic score at dusk
on Sunday night, July 4th. $6 admission into
grandstand. Many people watch from perimeter area,
including Cook County Circuit Court Rolling Meadows
property. Parade will be held on Monday, July 5 at
10 AM. Routes from Dunton and Oakton, south on
Dunton, east on Miner, and ends at Frontier Days
location at Recreation Park (500 E. Miner).
Earthquake in North Central Illinois
JUN 28 2004 -- An earthquake
(4.1 magnitude) hit 71 miles southwest of Chicago
near Utica and Ottawa at about 1:10 a.m. on early
Monday morning. No damage reported. Closest
'felt
report'
to Arlington Heights was in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Village of Arlington Heights to Purchase
Metropolis
JUN 22 2004 -- The Village Board voted Monday
to purchase the Metropolis
Performing Arts
Centre
for $2.1 million. Trustees Bert Rosenberg, Mark
Toljanic and Virginia Kucera opposed purchasing the
theater.
Promenade of Art to Close Area Near Vail and
Campbell Intersection
MAY 30 2004 -- Second annual event for
Northwest Community Healthcare Foundation will be
held June 5 & 6. Fine art and crafts from 160
artists will be showing.

Heights
MAY 20 2004 -- A new Subway
opened next to Kohl's and XSport Fitness & Tan
in Ridge Plaza. Another new Subway is also located
in the Westgate Shopping Center near Campbell and
Wilke.
Hillside Auto Repair and Towing Moving to
Industrial Park
MAY 20 2004 -- Hillside (owned by Mark Balek) will
move from its current location to a larger site at
120 W. University Drive. CVS/pharmacy
has expressed interest in the northeast corner of
Arlington Heights Road and Palatine Road, the
current Hillside location at 200 East Palatine
Road. Noise concerns with new neighbor, Air
Movement and Control Association International Inc.
at 30 W. University Drive, have been resolved.
Village Board Working to Improve Parking
Downtown Arl Hts Parking
MAY 18 2004 -- Motion approved to (1) negotiate
with Norwood Builders as it relates to the Norwood
project planned near Highland and Campbell, (2)
request proposal for design services to expand Vail
Avenue Parking garage over Highland Avenue, (3)
transfer some commuter permit sales from the Vail
Avenue garage to the Municipal Garage, (4) allow
permit parking at Municipal garage, (5) accommodate
Metro Lofts Condos at Vail Avenue garage, (6)
accommodate residential permits with Norwood at the
Vail Avenue garage, (7) provide for merchant and
retail parking for the Norwood project at the Vail
Avenue garage, (8) check project financing
costs.
Village Board Moves to Focus on Northside
Shopping Center Improvements
MAY 18 2004 -- Staff authorized to continue
discussion of redeveloment with owners of Town
& Country and Southpoint shopping centers.

Meijer Opens Tuesday May 25th in Rolling
Meadows
MAY 10 2004 -- Meijer's
200,000 square foot 24-hour Rolling Meadows store
is located at the intersection of Golf and
Algonquin roads near the border of Arlington

Discovery of Undergound Fuel Tank Causes Statue
Installation Delay
MAY 06 2004 -- Dedication of the "New Friends"
statue will likely occur in June. Statue
installation and grounds project near Metra Depot
at Evergreen and Northwest Highway was delayed at a
cost of $153,000 for removal of tank, contaminated
soil and some newly constructed materials which
need to be redone.
Grassy Park at Vail and Campbell Under
Construction this Summer
MAY 06 2004 -- Concerts held recent summers will be
moved to North School Park for this summer only.
Arlington Million -- Mane Event activities will
still be held at Vail and Campbell and nearby area
in August. The park will include a stage at the
south end, but will remain open with sidewalks and
a small fountain. Expected completion in
December.
Slots at Arlington Park and other Racetracks
Discussed in Springfield
MAY 06 2004 -- Gambling proponents in Springfield
are proposing the state to allow at least three new
casinos - including one in Waukegan, roll back
riverboat taxes, and put 500 or more slot machines
at horse racetracks. State law could override local
Arlington Heights opposition. State Sen. Wendell
Jones says the slot machines are needed to save
horse racing. Proposals are also meant to help
state budget.
Timber Court Condominiums -- Affordable Housing
Proposed
APR 29 2004 -- Tandem
Realty
has proposed three five-story buildings on the west
side of Old Arlington Heights Road, just south of
Dundee Road. In dispute and awaiting approval is
the village permission to build 120 units, which is
higher than the usual zoning approval.
Illinois Salutes 5K Run Planned for Memorial
Day
APR 22 2004 -- Five-kilometer run will take place 8
a.m. May 29. For information call (847) 749-2768 or

All-you-can-eat pancake breakfast for all
participants after the race at the Knights of
Columbus Hall, 15 N. Hickory Ave. The meal will
cost $5 for nonparticipants.
New Police Traffic Division Begins Mid-April
APR 01 2004 -- The Arlington Heights Police
Department will be bringing back a traffic division
to respond to resident complaints over traffic
concerns, such as speeding and ignoring stop signs
and red lights. The traffic unit will focus on
traffic details during the morning and afternoon
rush.
Road Work on Palatine Road in Arlington Heights
and Palatine Begins
APR 01 2004 -- Palatine Road traffic will be down
to one lane at times from Kennicott to Arlington
Heights Road. Work in Palatine will extend from
Northwest Highway until Rohlwing Road. Work is
expected to be finished by August 1.
Bill's Inn Closes its Doors
APR 01 2004 -- Opened in 1966, Bill's Inn closes as
its liquor license expires April 1. Renewal of the
license would require costly renovation to include
a restaurant, since Arlington Heights does not
permit bars without food service any longer. Owner
Larry Andres opted to close Bill's -- an old
Arlington favorite.
