Michael's Soon to Be Famous Restaurant
MAR 15 2004 -- Village of Arlington Heights gave
the go ahead for a special use permit for a
sit-down/carryout and drive-thru restaurant for a
new Michael's
Soon to Be Famous
Restaurant
located at 286 W. Rand Road (west end of Arlington
Plaza Shopping Center. Owner Michael Portillo
expects the restaurant to open in late summer or
early fall.
New Subway Coming Next to Kohl's
MAR 15 2004 -- A new Subway
is set to open near Kohl's in Ridge Plaza Shopping
Center.
Village Purchase of Metropolis Compared to
Arlington High 'Mistake'
MAR 12 2004 -- In a State of the Village
address to the Arlington Heights Rotary Club
Thursday, Mayor Arlene Mulder referred to the
debate of whether the Village of Arlington Heights
should purchase the Metropolis Performing Arts
Centre's auditorium, classrooms, lobby and offices
for $2.75 million. "We would just own the theater."
If the village does buy, "we would not operate the
theater ... We don't want to make the same
mistake in not buying the old Arlington High
School. That should have stayed in the public
domain," Mulder said.
Pipe Bomb Found at Front Door of Paradise
Banquets on Rand Road
MAR 08 2004 -- An employee of Paradise Banquets in
Prospect Heights found a dangerous pipe bomb Sunday
afternoon. Cook County Sheriff's Police Bomb Squad
detonated the bomb while Rand Road was blocked
between Thomas and Olive until about 4:30 pm. Local
businesses were evacuated. ATF and Prospect Heights
Police are investigating.
Christian Liberty Academy to Host Science Fair
MAR 06 2004 -- A regional Science Fair for the
Illinois Junior Science Academy is scheduled for
Saturday, March 13 at the Christian Liberty Academy
building at 502 West Euclid Ave in Arlington
Heights.
Granny's is Now Uptown Cafe
MAR 06 2004 -- Uptown Cafe is the new name owners
have given the former Granny's at Evergreen and
Miner. A new menu and new hours -- breakfast and
lunch -- are the noted changes. Call 847-398-1720

March Wind Storm Causes Power Outages and Tree
Damage
MAR 04 2004 -- High winds Friday morning caused
trees and limbs to fall in Arlington Heights. A
large tree fell on a house roof on Chicago Avenue
near Oakton Ave. The winds also damaged the
railroad signals and gates at Northwest Highway and
Wilke.
Daily Herald Headquarters Evacuated in Smoke
Scare
MAR 04 2004 -- A burnt out mechanical belt in
equipment in the Daily Herald building on Algonquin
Road caused evacuation for about one hours while
fighters searched for the source of the smoke,
which also tripped a detector.
Prospect Heights Aldi Opens February 26
FEB 21 2004 -- Prospect Heights
Aldi
at Rand and Thomas opens Thursday. Dominick's
across from Hersey High School closes in March.
Chamber of Commerce in Economic Forum
FEB 20 2004 -- Chambers of Commerce of Arlington
Heights, Mount Prospect and Rolling Meadows, in
partnership with the District 214 Community
Education Program, host an economic development
forum March 9 at Forest View Educational Center in
Arlington Heights, 7:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. Cost: $15 for
chamber members, $20 for late and non-chamber
registrants.
Features mayors Arlene Mulder, Gerald Farley and
Ken Nelson sharing each community's economic
development plans.
Lowes Could Start Construction this
Summer
FEB 20 2003 -- Arlington Heights Village Board
approved Lowe's proposal to move into the Surrey
Ridge shopping center. The old K-Mart
store and a portion of existing retail stores in
the shopping center will be demolished to make way
for a 162,000-square-foot Lowes
Home Improvement
Center,
which features appliances. Development depends on
IDOT
approval of an Algonquin Avenue entrance
stoplight.
Arlington Hts Village Board Rejects Public
Smoking Ban
FEB 10 2004 -- A smoking ban proposed by
Arlington Heights Trustee Stephen Daday would have
been the third suburban ban following Wilmette and
Skokie bans, but after a three-hour debate attended
by more than 200 people Monday night, the proposal
was rejected 6-2 with only Stephen Daday and Thomas
Stengren voting for the smoking ban. The rejection
is expected to be ratified at a Feb. 16 meeting.
The majority of trustees feared the ban would drive
customers away to neighboring towns, which would
hurt Arlington Heights businesses.
Store Closings for Dominick's, Gap, Lynn's Hallmark
and Fannie May
FEB 07 2004 -- Dominick's
in Prospect Heights across from Hersey High School
is set to close in March, Gap
has left its downtown Arlington location at Town
Square, Lynn's Hallmark owners are retiring and
closing shop and Fannie
May is set to
close
by mid-February. Fannie May could re-open if
purchased by Alpine Confections, which already
makes Maxfield's, Mrs.
Fields,
Harry
London,
Hallmark Chocolatier, Dolce d'Or and Botticelli
brands.

Retire
JAN 15 2004 -- Gregory Ford to retire on June
30 after 24 years of service ...

JAN 01 2004 -- Owners of Lynn's & Co.
Hallmark are planning to close their 12,000 square
foot Arlington Heights gift and greeting card
business and retire. Store will probably close
permanently in February.

Traffic Woes
JAN 01 2004 -- Traffic on Walnut and Dwyer near
Kirchoff has increased 50 percent since the opening
of Busse Center for Specialty Medicine highrise on
the Northwest Community Hospital
